The Wee Spoke Hub is a community bike workshop space at the Shrub Swap and Reuse Hub in central Edinburgh. Our ‘Bikes for All’ project (funded by Cycling Scotland) aims to overcome barriers to cycling faced by groups within the Edinburgh area, by providing people with bikes which have been donated to the Wee Spoke Hub, fixed up and safety-checked by our team of volunteers.
Outline of role:
In this role, volunteers will be asked to fix up donated bikes for distribution to participants in the project. Usually, you will be working on a bike on your own, with the help of the workshop facilitator. All your work and effort will contribute towards the Bikes for All initiative, which distributes bikes for free to groups facing barriers to cycling, within the Edinburgh area.
Skills, experience and attitude needed:
- patience and attention to detail
- a good level of bike maintenance knowledge
- a friendly, polite and respectful attitude towards other volunteers
Benefits to the volunteer:
- create a very valuable and empowering form of transport for some of the most vulnerable members of our society
- gain experience in bike maintenance
- gain a reference
- learn about co-operatives and the circular economy
- join and meet our amazing and friendly team of volunteers
- tea, coffee and biscuits (sometimes even pies!)
When/how many hours:
The workshop is on every Wednesday 5-8pm. While you don’t have to be there every week (or for the whole session), we ask that you give us a level of commitment to the project, as it’s useful for us to know how regularly you expect to be able to make it. Volunteers are asked to sign-up for sessions in advance.
As a volunteer you will also be part of the Wee Spoke Hub working group which meets regularly to make decisions about all things Wee Spoke Hub. Volunteers are encouraged to attend and participate in these meetings and Shrub open meetings.
Primary points of contact: Bikes for All Facilitator, Low-Carbon Transport Facilitator
Further assistance and support can also be obtained support from other facilitators and the co-operatives Board of Directors.
How to apply/what happens next:
Please send an e-mail to email@example.com with a short description of yourself, why you are interested in this role and your current level of bike maintenance knowledge. All new volunteers will be invited to come along for a short induction in which you will learn more about Bikes for All, the Wee Spoke Hub and the Shrub co-operative.
