Board Elections 2017

During our AGM on the 22nd of November we were able to elect 9 Board of Directors.

What do the Board Do?

The Board is a necessary component of all co-operatives. The role of the board is to collectively ensure the long-term success of SHRUB in accordance with its values and with the International Co-operative Alliance Statement on Co-operative Identity. The Board is appointed by and accountable to the members who own and control the SHRUB co-operative. The Board represents the membership, making business decisions the interests of members. The Board acts as the custodian of the SHRUB’s assets to safeguard the organisation for the future.

Meet our new Board:

Nikita Jha:

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
I am currently on the SHRUB Board of Directors, and have also been the year before.
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
This is my third year being involved with the SHRUB, and so I understand and have been able to
internalise its ethos and values. As the SHRUB grows in complexity and size, it needs to be
supported and guided by people who not only understand it, but are also committed to it. I am
willing and able to make that commitment. Having deeply engaged with the organisation, I feel
there are areas where it could be further strengthened, and would be happy to work alongside the
rest of the SHRUB community to work towards carrying this out. Also given the length of my
involvement with the SHRUB, I believe I can also provide an element of stability to the community.
I also feel I still have a lot to learn from the role and the skills associated with it.

Rory Mills:

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
I have volunteered for the Wee Spoke Hub for three years. I have facilitated Wee Spoke Hub
workshops, organised volunteer meetings, helped set up an accounting system and taught
bicycle mechanics to both volunteers and workshop users.
I have designed and built upcycled chandeliers for the Shrub Coop swap shop. I facilitated
some workshops to complete the chandeliers.
I volunteer for the community run bike workshop Reading Bicycle Kitchen as a bike
mechanic and retail assistant.
I have experience handling money in both these social enterprises.
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
I would like to grow the Wee Spoke Hub’s operations and support its volunteer base

Alessio Burgio:

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
At the moment I am an active giver and buyer of stuff to the reuse hub.
I signed up 1 month ago after my partner gave me the heads up.
I am volunteering for the Meadows Festival 2018, green committee (first experience).
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
I am interested in helping out with the decision making process and consider our cause essential in
nowadays societies.
I have time in my hands, and enjoy working with people on concepts and strategies.
I am an observer, but an active challenger.
I believe in the power of discussions: different points of view will result in more encompassing
decisions.
Michael Jordan used to say, “Talent win games, but teamwork and intelligence win
championships”. Well, let’s work together so that our cause may win Edinburgh hearts!

Calum Glen

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
I have been volunteering with the WeeSpoke Hub helping to run the DIY workshop every Tuesday
for the last four months.
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
I would like to be on the Shrub Board because it would be an opportunity for me to contribute to the
Shrub project in a way other than volunteering, and to help develop and support the volunteer
base.

Stewart Lawrence

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
I am currently volunteering in the finance team and have been since around mid-July 2017.
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
I am interested to see what sort of skills I can bring to the table. I’ve previously worked for Earthy
Foods in the finance team there so I’d like to hopefully use what experience I gained there to try
and solve problems when they come up and contribute based on that experience. On a more
personal note, I think it would be a good experience to learn how a board works and to gain
additional skills, even it is just being more confident in putting my own opinion across.

Joaquín Martínez García

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
I am already volunteering with Food Sharing Edinburgh, where I am also a trustee. I cooperate as
much as possible, for example in WNW, cooking workshops, disco soup and facilitator in Monday’s
meetings.
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
After volunteering for more than 5 months with Food Sharing Edinburgh, I would like to expand my
experience as a trustee toward the Shrub. I am impressed with the activities developed in FSE and
with the engagement of its volunteers and staff. I think I can repeat this positive experience
volunteering in the Shrub. Likewise, I completely agree with the Shrub’s vision and values, and I
believe that they are key for the correct development of the world. In addition, I got in February
2017 a Certificate in Corporate Governance issued by Association of Corporate Governance
Practitioners in Birmingham and I would to put in practice the principles I learned.

Lorna Ramm

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
Currently I am an active member of the Events and Workshops group. I joined earlier this
year, the fashion show being my first Event to help at and I am now about to start running my own
workshop, Tinny Crafts.
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
I have been enjoying my involvement in the Events and Workshops group and I am keen to
expand this to a wider involvement with SHRUB.

Alan Peddie

What is your current involvement with the SHRUB or experience as part of similar
organisations or projects?
External board member appointed due to links with University of Edinburgh where I work for the
Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability
Why would you like to be on the SHRUB Board of Directors?
I would love to continue trying to help a great project thrive as it has been.
