Christmas- the most wasteful time of the year?

Christmas- the most cheery time of the year, is sadly also the period in which the UK produces the most waste. Each year we throw away enough wrapping paper to go around the equator nine times. Combine that with the 4,500 tons of tin foil and 13,350 tons of glass that goes through the waste disposal system and the countless gifts and gadgets that are chucked away because they’re unwanted, broken or just ‘old’, it’s clear that Christmas does not do the planet any good.

Is it possible to enjoy Christmas, participate in all the gift giving and receiving without producing so much waste? Here at SHRUB we like to think so! We love Christmas as much as anyone and at our Swap Shop we’re collecting lots of pre-loved decorations, gifts and clothing that will see you through the festive period- waste free. It’s really easy to become a member of the Shop to collect tokens to spend in-store and peruse our free member’s shop, for more information on why you should join SHRUB and to become a member, have a look at the Get Involved section of the website.

As well as our awesome collection of Christmas gifts and decorations in the Swap shop, SHRUB also has loads of workshops happening throughout December where you can create your own earth friendly Holiday gifts and decorations! If you’d rather gift an experience this festive season, our workshops are open to all, free and most materials are provided, so they are perfect to do with a loved one. Our Upcycled Bookbinding workshop happening on the 14th December will teach you how to create and decorate your own unique journals, perfect for those who look to write, draw, college and paint. On the 5th and 12th of December we have some exciting upcycled jewelry workshops that utilize materials that would otherwise be discarded and harm the planet, so you can help fight unnecessary waste and make something beautiful at the same time! If you’d like to craft your own earth friendly decorations, pop into the SHRUB on the 2nd or 4th December and deck out your own as well as SHRUB’s Christmas tree.

SHRUB works hard to provide an alternative to unconscious consumerism and is on a mission to end all unnecessary waste, we believe Christmas can be filled with wonder and cheer without costing the earth!
