Fuel for School Project Planner

Fuel for School Project Planner

About Food Sharing Edinburgh

Food Sharing Edinburgh is an exciting volunteer-led food waste reduction project. We are part of a global movement of communities uniting to end food waste. We collect food that would otherwise be binned, and distribute it to those who can use it! Food Sharing aims to bring people together to eat well, end waste and create a more sustainable food system.

About the Opportunity

  • Through Fuel for School, we will be teaching waste reduction lessons in local high schools in the 2019/2020 academic year whilst delivering a weekly box of excess food for children to use for a pay-as-you-feel stall. We will be teaching about food waste and food systems with a focus on how food interacts with the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • In this role, you can make a real difference to school students’ attitudes towards sustainability and food systems. You have the potential to make a long term impact by inspiring future generations to help protect the planet.
  • As part of a small team, you will be responsible for reaching out to potential partner schools around Edinburgh promoting the Fuel for School workshop and food stall package.
  • In your team, you will also be asked to design a set of innovative lesson plans linking food systems to different Sustainable Development Goals. You will be given the opportunity to design lesson plans targeting a range of age groups from primary to high school students.
  • This is an excellent opportunity to gain partnership work and project management experience, as well as skills in lesson plan design. In this role, you will also gain experience communicating with a wide range of stakeholders through a variety of channels, including social media, email, phone and face-to-face.

Skills and Experience

  • We are looking for volunteers with experience in education or experience of working with children and/or teenagers, especially as part of the Scottish education system.
  • Excellent communication, persuasion and teamwork skills are essential.
  • Experience of partnership work, sales and marketing is desirable.
  • A confident user of social media and other communication platforms (desirable).

Practical Details

  • You will receive a full introduction to Food Sharing Edinburgh and your role on Monday 21st January 2019 (6-8pm at 22 Bread Street). During this session, we will also start planning the project, set up group communication channels and create a clear timeline for project delivery.
  • After this initial meeting, volunteers will be required to meet up at least once a week with their team members (you may use any of the SHRUB premises).
  • The role requires a commitment of 2-4 hours of work per week, ideally for at least 6 months.
  • An important aspect of this role is planning and delivering an informative Open Evening for teachers and school staff, due to be held in early March 2019. Therefore, it is essential that you are available in the run up to and during this time.
  • This project is intended to be fully volunteer led, and we encourage volunteers to take responsibility for planning and executing the project.
  • This volunteer role is supported by the Food Sharing Project Coordinator and the Food Sharing Hub Coordinator.
