Meet your candidates for the Shrub Board!

On Wednesday 23rd November, the Shrub Swap & Reuse Hub Cooperative will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM). At this meeting, members of the Coop will have the opportunity to vote on who will form the new Board of Directors.

Members are able to put themselves forward for election, either by turning up in person on the night or by filling in this form. It’s really helpful if you’re able to fill in the form in advance.

Here are the candidates who have already filled in the application form:

Name: Pablo Perez

Why are you interested in becoming a BoD member?
I’ve been a BoD member for the past year and have enjoyed very much working with the rest of directors and staff in thinking about the long-term development of SHRUB. Being possibly my last year in Edinburgh, I’d like to continue being a BOD member to give all I have using my previous experience in the role.

What skills would you bring to the BoD?
I am committed to the cause of SHRUB and have the experience of being a BoD member in the past. I think having a mixed composition of new directors and old ones is necessary so that knowledge is transmitted and not lost in the way, and I would be happy to facilitate that transition and work towards getting the wiki done. I am also interested in the debate around changing our legal structure and would be willing to put some time into that.

Name: Kat Zhuchko

Why are you interested in becoming a BoD member?
I feel passionate about the environment and would like to get more involved in reducing the negative effects waste can have on everything around us; I believe that the Board of Directors can create ideas on how to influence the people around us to be more proactive. The current political situation focuses more on the social issues while almost totally ignoring the environmental problems and their long term consequences. I think that SHRUB has a great agenda that aims to solve these issues and I want to be a part of it.

What skills would you bring to the BoD?
Leadership and communication as well as the desire for innovative ideas

Why are you interested in becoming a BoD member?
I have been a BoD for a year now and have learned so much about sustainability, team work and social justice in this short amount of time. I enjoy working with the team and would love to continue the adventure with the Swap and Reuse Hub.

What skills would you bring to the BoD?
I have been organising movie nights (CineShrub) for the past year and look forward to continue this activity. I also plan to get more involved with the communication & Outreach working group and keep foreseeing the long term plan of the Shrub with the other directors. I might go away next September but I’m happy to work online.

Name: Mikel Vallejo

Why are you interested in becoming a BoD member?
Due to the fact that I have finished my studies, I feel extremely motivated to start doing something real apart from what I learnt in University. As a result, taking part in a real scenario, it’s gonna be a real challenge for me.

What skills would you bring to the BoD?
I have finished my Masters Degree in International Business Management. Therefore, I think I could bring valuable ideas for the management of the organisation.

Name: Ollie Nathan

Why are you interested in becoming a BoD member?
The shrub has developed a community that may be the strongest it has ever been! The Shrub’s approach to waste reduction and community building is one I fully align with, with consensus decision making at the heart. The shrub means a lot to me and having been away for the last two years keeping abreast from afar I am really keen to work on the ground. I have returned to Edinburgh in the hope that I may support the Shrub in its next phases, promote it’s aims and objectives, including: Coming closer to being its own circular economy and continuing to support inclusion of the community beyond the student population.

What skills would you bring to the BoD?
My passion and compassion for the Shrub and the individual people as well as the collective that makes SHRUB becomes a skill in supporting others, mediation, building relationships, am a good facilitator, tension diffuser (hairdryer). I’m a pretty good cheerleader and can be the horse power also to keep things moving and communication flowing! I have willingness to make the right decisions for the SHRUB and to continue learning.
Give me a task and I’ll find a way, either I’ll do it or find someone who can.
