Textile Crafts Volunteer

Outline of the Role

The Textile Crafts Volunteer will work with the Circular Economy Coordinator, various guest facilitators, and the SHRUB Events Working Group to deliver various workshops and drop-in sessions on textile crafts. We are specifically looking for volunteers with hand sewing and sewing machine skills to help at our weekly sewing drop-in on Tuesdays 2-5pm, and volunteers with sewing and crochet skills to help at our fortnightly repair workshops starting in September.

The role involves:

  • On Tuesdays:
  • Managing the SHRUB Space workshop space
  • Welcoming members of public to the space
  • Helping the public with their sewing projects
  • Setting up the sewing machines and familiarising yourself with the materials and other equipment available
  • Collecting donations
  • During Thursday workshops:
  • Opening, setting up and closing the space
  • Setting up refreshments
  • Supporting the facilitator with the running of the workshop
  • Helping participants with their projects
  • Collecting donations / payments
  • Collecting evaluation forms

As a volunteer you will be involved in providing skills and knowledge to the Edinburgh community resulting in a more circular economy. You can choose to receive training in sustainability and zero waste opportunities, and will become a part of the vibrant creative community at the SHRUB co-operative, with an opportunity to take part in decision-making and make friends along the way!

Practical Details

  • Where: The SHRUB Cooperative, 17 Guthrie Street, EH1 1JG Edinburgh
  • When: Drop-in events Tuesdays 2-5pm; workshops according to workshop schedule on Tuesday and Thursday evenings; Fortnightly Working Group meetings on Tuesday evenings
  • Hours per week: 2-5 (more when events are on)
  • Development opportunities: Induction by the SHRUB Circular Economy Coordinator. Further training available as desired.
