SHRUB Cooperative is a member-led cooperative, working for a world without waste.
Our purpose is
To provide a welcoming space for rethinking our relationship to waste, reducing consumption and developing effective use of resources
To support community empowerment in Edinburgh, learning and sharing skills to make a practical difference to the world we share
To deliver innovative waste prevention, creative reuse and repair practices in a living laboratory of Circular Economy

Our cooperative is in an exciting period of renewal and transition. Although we have recently wound down our Zero Waste Hub, we continue to operate a thriving bike repair project in the Wee Spoke Hub, and support community led projects such as the Repair What You Wear and Sewing Café workshops and food rescue in partnership with The Pavillion cafe. We are now in the process of developing a 10-year plan for the cooperative, in consultation with our members and the wider community, so this is an exciting time to join the organisation and contribute to defining our mission and vision for the future.
As a Registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), our Constitution provides for Trustees to formally oversee the activities of SHRUB Cooperative and ensure we act in accordance with our purposes and the wishes of members of the Cooperative. We are inviting applications to the role of Trustee from SHRUB members and others interested in contributing to the Coop’s development and evolution. Trustees have a wide-ranging remit and there are opportunities for involvement across the work that SHRUB undertakes. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in Fundraising and HR.
Current areas of work within the board include
Welfare and HR
Governance and Policy
Finance and Fundraising
Communications
Social Enterprise
Risk and Compliance
Strategy and Vision
Trustees have a wide-ranging remit and typically contribute across the organisation, but we are open to trustees specialising in a specific area. This includes attending regular trustee meetings and joint staff–trustee meetings, participating in the Annual General Meeting (AGM), and supporting the preparation of AGM materials and the organisation’s annual report. Trustees are also expected to review and provide input on key documents on an ad-hoc basis, such as strategic plans, policies and major funding or operational decisions, offering constructive challenge, feedback and direction.
We are particularly keen to hear from individuals with experience in Fundraising and/or HR who may wish to take a lead or specialist role in these areas.
For any further information and informal discussion about the role, please contact trustees@shrubcoop.org
